- The back seat is the safest place in the car as most collisions are head on.
- No person under 1.4m tall should ever sit in the front seat of a car with a passenger air bag fitted.
- People loose in the car could injure others as well as themselves in an accident.
- Never use one seat belt for more than one person.
- Never hold a child on your lap – even if you are wearing a seat belt.
- If no child seat is available, using shoulder straps is safer than just a lap belt. Place the child on a cushion, clothing etc. to raise his height so the shoulder strap doesn't cut across his head or neck.
- Never place a shoulder strap under a child's arm or behind his back.
- If you are forced to use a lap belt, make sure it fits snugly across the thighs – never across the tummy.
- Never allow children to ride in the back of a pickup (even with a canopy), in the back of a station wagon, on the parcel shelf, in the boot etc.
